Black Writers Read Virtual Summer Book Club Discussion with Tracy Cross

July 6, 2023 @ 7:00 pm

Virtual Summer Book Club Discussion with Tracy Cross
$10 per person
Join us for our August Virtual Book Club with Tracy Cross, author of the horror novel, Rootwork.
Black Writers Read presents its first Virtual Book Club! Every summer, we will come together and read books from several of the writers featured on Black Writers Read. There will be one book reserved for each month. Book Club members will have an opportunity to engage with the author as they will be joining us for the guided conversation. Each session will last 90 minutes and will include a Q&A with the book’s author. Groups will be kept small to allow for more opportunities to engage with the author and other readers.

The year is 1889. Set in a small Louisiana parish, deep in the segregated South, Cross’s Rootwork follows school-age sisters, Betty, Ann, and Pee Wee during one life-changing summer when the three of them head off to stay with their hoodoo-practicing aunt, Theodora, a powerful woman feared by the local townspeople. She teaches the girls the secrets of her craft, like how to make “hot foot powder” and how to whip up some “goofer dust” to get back at an enemy. The girls delight in their harmless hoodoo adventures until a tragic event involving the town’s racist sheriff promises to change their lives forever.
A story of love and redemption, Rootwork explores the strength of family and the darker side of the heart.
All sessions will take place virtually over Zoom. Participants will receive Zoom information in a separate email as the date approaches.
There will be a reading companion guide provided for each book.
Please purchase the books separately via Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Bookshop.org.
